Orthocerasย ("straight horn") is aย genusย of extinctย nautiloidย cephalopod. This genus is sometimes calledย Orthoceratites. Note it is sometimes misspelled asย Orthocera,ย Orthocerusย orย Orthocerosย (Sweet 1964:K222).
Orthocerasย fossils are common and have a global distribution, occurring in any marine rock, especially inย limestone.
These are slender, elongate shells with the middle of theย body chamberย transverselyย constricted, and a subcentralย orthochoaniticย siphuncle. The surface is ornamented by a network of fineย liraeย (Sweet 1964:K224). Many other very similar species are included under the genusย Michelinoceras.
